The City of Quesnel, in collaboration with Nazko and Lhtako Dene First Nations, is undertaking fuel management around the paved trail that runs along the West side of highway 97 between the Arts and Recreation Centre and Dragon Hill Road as part of our Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The treatments are not anticipated to affect trail-use. It is expected that the treatments will be completed by December 18, 2020.
Part of this fuel management project will include a program of piling and burning when the proper venting for air quality allows. Controlled burning generates less smoke than out-of-control wildfires and helps us proactively take measures to prevent disasters, which is more affordable than reactively having to recover from them.
The goal of this work is to reduce the amount of fuel available to a fire:
- On the forest floor (surface fuels)
- In the mid-canopy (ladder fuels)
- In the canopy (crown fuels)
This work is part of the ongoing Forestry Initiatives Program of the Quesnel and Surrounding Area Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
