If you are representing a commercial or industrial project you should always consult the City of Quesnel. If otherwise in doubt, please consult the City of Quesnel Building Bylaw. The bylaws outline more specifically when a building permit is, and is not required.
Do I need a building permit for a garden shed?
If the shed is bigger than 10 m2 108 square feet then yes, a permit is required. Even if the shed is under the size for a permit it’s still required to comply with the setbacks for your zoning. For more information contact the Planning Department.

Do I require a permit to put a deck on the rear of my house?
No permit is required If the deck is less than 600mm or 24” from grade to deck surface, it is not affixed to the house and does not have a roof.
I am renovating my basement and only putting up non-loadbearing walls, do I need a permit?
Yes, a permit is required.
I am replacing my kitchen cabinets and sink do I need a permit for this work?
Provided the kitchen sink is being replaced only and is not being moved or relocated, then no permits are required.
I am renovating my bathroom, and I am removing the drywall and moving the fixture to new locations do I need permits?
Yes, you will require a plumbing permit. A building permit is required if the exterior walls are also part of the renovation.
Other reasons you may require permits.
- Change of occupancy in a building such as a drug store switching to a restaurant.
- Liquor License application: the City is required to determine the occupant load of the establishment.
- Replacing water or sewer lines to your house or building.
- Installing a sprinkler system or fire alarm system.
