A secondary suite is a self-contained accessory dwelling unit, located within a single-detached home ( sometimes referred to as a "basement suite"), row house, or duplex. It has a separate kitchen, sleeping, and bathing facilities. The suite must have at least one access door leading directly outside the suite. A secondary suite does not have a Certificate of Titles and it cannot be strata titled. A secondary suite will be assigned a separate address at the building permit stage.
To create a legal secondary suite, you must obtain a Building Permit. As well, your property must be zoned to allow a secondary suite.
Review the Getting Started page for frequently asked questions and the potential benefits of accessory dwelling units.
