This week, Mayor Simpson and Councillors Elliott, Goulet, Paull and Roodenburg are attending the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention. Here are some updates:
- Two new grant opportunities were announced for local governments at UBCM:
- Poverty Reduction Planning & Action deals with poverty reduction and may provide between $25,000 to $50,00 for planning work or actions to reduce poverty in communities;
- Community Wellness and Harm Reduction may provide $15,000 to $50,000 to continue work with the Community Caring for People with Addictions (CCPA) on harm reduction partnerships and initiatives. Learn more about the CCPA process here: http://bit.ly/2lyKCj7
- Poverty Reduction Planning & Action deals with poverty reduction and may provide between $25,000 to $50,00 for planning work or actions to reduce poverty in communities;
- In partnership with the Cariboo Regional District, the City of Quesnel is taking the lead on developing an inventory and action plan for child care services in the North Cariboo. - Mayor Simpson hand-delivered a binder of letters from businesses and residents regarding local policing and public safety to the Minister of Public Affairs and the Premier.
- Mayor Simpson presented to UBCM delegates on resilient communities and how Quesnel is proactively managing our way through this challenging time. The Mayor also presented to the Canadian Institute of Forestry – BC Chapter on our Future of Forestry Think Tank process. You can learn more about the process here: http://bit.ly/2mIGiOj
- Councillor Roodenburg was elected as Second Vice-President as part of the UBCM Executive.
- Wood Works! presented the City with the Community Award of Merit for our support of the BC Wood industry and our commitment to using wood in the new Forestry Innovation Centre. In previous years, we also won this award for the West Fraser Centre and South Quesnel Park.
