Construction season is here, and this year, we'll see new projects starting and existing projects ramping up, impacting major routes. There will be delays and longer commute times as a result. Signage and detours will be in place. Please plan your routes accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination.
We recognize this is inconvenient, but these projects need to be completed during the construction season when contractors are available. We'll be working with the contractors to minimize the inconvenience wherever possible.
Updates will be provided on the City of Quesnel social media channels and this page as projects progress.
Please note that no construction activities will take place from July 18-21 for Billy Barker Days. However, road closures and detours will remain in effect.
Construction Projects
The planned Phase II repairs to Johnston Bridge will be delayed by one year due to factors beyond our control. Before the bridge repairs can begin, telecommunications infrastructure must be removed from the bridge. This process has taken longer than anticipated, impacting the overall timeline.
During construction, the gas line will need to be temporarily taken out of service. To ensure an uninterrupted natural gas supply to customers, the work will be completed in a phased approach, requiring a full spring-to-fall construction season to finish the bridge repairs.
An updated timeline for the project will be established once the telecommunications infrastructure removal has been completed.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve the bridge.
The Quesnel School District's general contractor will continue the installation of water, sewer, street lighting, sidewalk, and road on Nadeau St for the new Carson Elementary School. Residents can expect Nadeau St between Nickel Ridge Ave and Johnston Ave to be closed again soon, reopening in late fall. During this time, the Nadeau St and Hwy 97 intersection will be the only exit and entry point for Carson Subdivision. A detour map will be posted here when the closure occurs.
Starting April 3, 2025, City crews will begin installing new storm sewer, replacing the sidewalk, curb, and gutter, and repaving the 600 block of Walkem St and Bowron Ave, from Front St to Walkem St. The project will take place Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm, and is expected to last up to four months.
Hospital access via Bowron Ave and Walkem St will be restricted during construction. Please use the access at McNaughton Ave and Front St.
FAQs
2024 was the first phase, which included the installation of approximately 90 m of water main and sanitary main, a new fire hydrant, and road restoration.
This year, Telus will remove telecommunications infrastructure, followed by the City establishing a new timeline for Phase II, the rehabilitation of the bridge structure.
This would have had to go through private property, creating significant extra expenses and liability.
