Risk of Landslide - Select locations in Quesnel

The City of Quesnel has ordered a state of local emergency due to the risk of landslide within select areas within Quesnel, including Panorama Ridge and Dragon Hill Road. The state of local emergency allows the city to respond to the threat of land erosion which could potentially result in the destruction of infrastructure & property, and create risks to public safety.

Land movement is also being evaluated and monitored at Carson Elementary School located at 1255 Graham Ave. where land slippage has occurred outside of the fenced school field.

The City is responding to erosion along the land movement areas and is continually monitoring the situation. Updates will be provided as they become available.

To ensure public safety, residents are being asked to stay away the areas of Panorama Ridge and Dragon Hill Road until further notice due to the potential risk of landslide, and to obey all warning and hazard signs for their own safety and for the safety of City crews.

Updates

April 26, 2021 – Update

A geotechnical survey of Panorama Ridge has been completed. The Review included the assessment of the recent land movement observed in the area.

At this time Geotechnical professionals are advising that the residents located in the Panorama Ridge properties are not currently at imminent risk. This could change during the remainder of 2021 freshet, however, and as such, they recommend the Evacuation Alert to be maintained until the groundwater conditions in the area change and the slopes immediately below the escarpment dry and become more stable. The City will follow this advice.

The Evacuation Alert could be changed to an Evacuation Order if further land movement occurs that then places residents in an imminent risk.

The City is currently working to have a geotechnical survey completed for the properties on Dragon Hill Road. The recommendations to landowners will be shared once the review is complete.

The City of Quesnel will provide the landowners of the affected properties updates as they become available.

April 29, 2021 – Update

A geotechnical survey of Dragon Hill Road has been completed. The Review included the assessment of the recent land movement observed in the area.

The Evacuation Alert has now been amended, and some properties can now be taken off of Evacuation Alert.

At this time the geotechnical professionals are advising that the other properties under Evacuation Alert are not currently at imminent risk. This could change during the remainder of 2021 freshet, however, and as such, the geotechnical professionals recommend the Evacuation Alert to be maintained on the properties listed on the new updated map until the groundwater conditions in the area change and the slopes immediately below the escarpment dry and become more stable. The City will follow this advice.

  • Please see the attached map for the list of properties still under Evacuation Alert.

The Evacuation Alert could be changed to an Evacuation Order if further land movement occurs that then places residents in an imminent risk.

The City of Quesnel will provide the landowners of the affected properties updates as they become available.
