QUESNEL, B.C. – The City of Quesnel is pleased to announce that thanks to the hard work of the entire community, the City received five blooms for the first time at the 2006 12th Annual Communities in Bloom national Awards Ceremony. In addition to the five blooms special mention was made of the Four Corners revitalization project and what it will add to the downtown core.

“I am so proud of what our community has done on the national Communities in Bloom stage,” said CiB Committee Chair and City Councillor Mary Sjostrom. “It was a privilege to represent our City at this international event and it made me realize how much we’ve accomplished. To our dedicated City staff, committee members and residents, I offer hearty congratulations.”

The City competed in the 10,001 to 20,000 population category, finishing with a total score of 83.2%, two percentage points higher than last year. Once again, Quesnel received high scores for community involvement, 113.5 points out of a possible 125. Gains were also made in the areas of tidiness, environmental awareness, natural and cultural heritage conservation, tree/urban forest management, landscaped areas and floral displays.

The City also won the prestigious Second Annual Canada Lands Company Sustainable Development Award, which emphasized the efforts of “meeting environmental challenges through cooperative partnerships of industry, government and the citizenry.” This was thanks in part to the efforts underway around the Green City Initiative, a result of the Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation’s Quesnel 2020 visioning process. Among the initiatives mentioned were the Quesnel Air Quality Roundtable and the partnership between Silva Gro and Quesnel River Pulp that allows the nursery to use warm water effluent from the mill for greenhouse heating.
